About Fort Miley

Fort Miley is known to San Franciscans today as the terminus of one of several routes of the No. 38 bus line which operates mostly on Geary Boulevard, as a Veterans' Hospital, and as park land which is under the National Park Service as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  The Fort Miley Military Reservation on Point Lobos, one of the outer headlands on the southern side of the Golden Gate, was acquired by the U.S. Army in 1893 and used as part of the seacoast defense of San Francisco Harbor during the early phases of America's involvement in World War II.  Overlooking Land's End, most of the original Army buildings were demolished in 1934 to allow construction of the Fort Miley Veterans Administration Hospital. The remains of several pre-World War I batteries edge the perimeter of the hospital. West Fort Miley offers visitors a grassy picnic area situated among three gun emplacements, including Battery Chester (1903-1943), which offers a spectacular view down Ocean Beach.

January GCB West: The Trident Sausalito

Sunday January 24th • 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The Trident
558 Bridgeway
Sausalito, CA

Enjoy a special Sunday edition on the water in historic Sausalito.  Take in the spectacular views of San Francisco and the bay.  Located at 558 Bridgeway in the heart of Sausalito California, a scant .2 miles (5 minute walk) from the Ferry Landing, this month’s happy hour will be at The Trident, the former home of the San Francisco Yacht Club.  Their 75-item wine list is filled with mostly familiar wines that appeal to a wide variety of people - names like Kenwood, Honig, Banfi, Seghesio, Rombauer, Kistler, Duckhorn and Silver Oak, along with copious beer choices, mixed drinks and food.

The Trident itself is stunning, with that period ceilings, dark wood-slatted walls, curved booths and a magical view of Oz, the San Francisco skyline. As you walk down the hall, off the board deck parking lot on Bridgeway, you enter a time capsule, where the musicians playing near the host stand seem to channel Joan Baez.

You can almost feel the presence of Janis Joplin, who loved the place so much that she had a table in the corner with a panoramic view of Bridgeway and San Francisco, next to a private room where she could escape.

We will have a Brown discount on both food and drink and our own little area reserved across from the bar; for those alums who live in Sausalito or want to take the Ferry with their bike, free bike parking is provided for customers. Valet car parking is free for the first hour and then $6 per hour after that.

Transportation Options

The Ferry from San Francisco Departs SF from the Ferry Building at 4:40 PM (arr 5:10 PM) and from Fisherman’s Wharf at 4:00 PM or 5:35 PM(arr 4:25 PM or 6:00 PM); the LAST Ferry back departs Sausalito at 6:45 PM to the SF Ferry Bldg, but the Golden Gate Transit Bus runs late and its schedule is here: http://www.oursausalito.com/getting-to-sausalito/buses-in-sausalito.html

Driving from SF (and most parts of Marin) is very easy and street parking (meters enforced till 6:00 PM) is available in addition to the valet service.   Nearby municipal parking lots are $2.00 to $3.00 per hour (payment required till 10:00 PM).  For those of you ferrying in from San Francisco, and want to stay later, chances are excellent that rides will be available back to the city with your fellow alums.  While this is likely, it cannot be guaranteed, so ask around while you’re there.  Another option would be to ferry there with your bike and bike back across the GG Bridge.
